Depression is not just about feeling sad for an extended period of time. It could look like a loss of appetite, losing the motivation to do anything, or finding it difficult to get out of bed. Depression can be triggered by several things such as losing a loved one, a divorce, financial stress, or hormonal changes.

Depression does not discriminate as it can impact people from all walks of life. Depression can stem from traumatic events, chemical imbalances in the brain, an unhealthy environment, a major life transition, different lifestyle factors, or illnesses.

Depression can be marked by persistent low mood, loss of interest in doing things, fatigue, feeling worthless/hopeless, inability to concentrate, or irregular sleep. It can also lead to thoughts of suicide, or suicide attempts. In Canada, the suicide rate among men is three times higher than women, and Indigenous Peoples' are more likely than the national average to attempt suicide.
